1PS Phase Separator for Solvent Extraction

Whatman 1PS Phase Separator from GE Healthcare’s Life Sciences business is a hydrophobic filter for routine solvent extraction. Within seconds it retains aqueous phases, while solvent phases flow through.

  • Impregnated with stabilized silicone to create a hydrophobic filter
  • Multiple separations can be processed in parallel
  • No special training required
  • Can replace a separatory funnel in certain applications

Hydrophobic solvent extraction paper

Solvent extraction can be time-consuming and messy when numerous separations are required. GE’s Whatman 1PS Phase Separator is impregnated with stabilized silicone, creating a hydrophobic filter paper that can replace separatory funnel use in certain applications.

Rapid solvent extraction

Mixed phases are poured directly into the Whatman 1PS Phase Separator filter. The solvent phase flows through the paper quickly and cleanly, automatically stopping after the process is complete; all of the aqueous phase is retained. Droplets are automatically separated within seconds.

Grade 4V Fluted Filter Paper, FF

GE’s Whatman Grade 4V filter paper is well suited for qualitative analysis or general filtration of coarse particles. The fluted filter design increases filtration speed, flow rate, and loading capacity.

  • Very fast flow rate
  • Retention of coarse and gelatinous precipitates
  • Nominal particle retention rating of 20–25 µm
  • Fast filtration speed (Herzberg 37 s)
  • Fluted (pre-pleated) for compatibility with conical filter funnels without the need for further folding

Fluted filter for capturing gelatinous precipitate

Whatman Grade 4V prepleated (fluted) filter paper from GE is frequently used to filter gelatinous precipitate or during general filtration that does not require the collection of fine particles. The filter sheets are also useful for rapid filtration of biological fluids or organic extracts prior to analysis.

  • Grade: Grade 4V
  • Grade Type: Folded (Prepleated)
  • Typical Particle Retention in Liquid: 25 µm
  • Typical Water Flow Rate (ml/min) for 9cm diameter: 247
  • Nominal Thickness: 210 µm
  • Nominal Basis Weight: 92 g/m2
  • Material: Cellulose
  • Typical Trace Element Levels: Aluminium 3.6 µg/g, Antimony <0.5 µg/g, Arsenic <0.5 µg/g, Barium <0.5 µg/g, Boron <1 µg/g, Calcium 27.5 µg/g, Chromium 1 µg/g, Copper 0.9 µg/g, Iron 13.7 µg/g, Lead <0.5 µg/g, Magnesium 21 µg/g, Manganese <0.5 µg/g, Mercury <0.5 µg/g, Potassium 6.2 µg/g, Silicon 8.8 µg/g, Sodium 32.3 µg/g, Zinc 58.3 µg/g

  • FTA DMPK Cards

  • DBS microvolume sampling requires only 10 to 20 μl per sample.
  • Fewer experimental animals are required because Toxicokinetic data are derived from Toxicology animals, thereby eliminating satellite colonies.
  • More consistent data are obtained through more serial sampling from individual animals and less reliance on composite data.
  • The 3-step DBS procedure is much more straightforward than the cumbersome centrifugation, isolation and cleanup of plasma.
  • On-substrate cleanup has the potential to convey greater analyte stability, especially for enzyme-sensitive compounds.
  • Room temperature stability saves on cost of dry ice shipments.
  • Shipping without dry ice allows more remote sampling.

FTA DMPK-C card is not impregnated with chemicals and may be better suited for protein-based biomolecules. Samples can be shipped and stored at ambient temperature and long-term stability has been demonstrated for analytes and metabolites sensitive to plasma enzymes.
